It is a subject of permanent discussion among politicians, economists, sociologists and journalists. All works of research on the demographical situation in modern Russia show one undeniable fact. Russia is a country of a huge imbalance between the number of males and females. I guess after reading the previous sub chapter it is not difficult to figure out which side the balance is displaced. Let us have a look at the research work of professor Akopyan, made in 2001 who is also a director of the Republican Center of Human Reproduction in Russia. According to his research there are nine million more males than females. In other words, the number of women in Russia who do not have an opposite sex match is equal to the population of New York City. This statistical data comes from the hospitals and particularly from the Department of Labor and Deliveries. By the time males in Russia achieve the age of fertility this gap appears to be bigger and only progresses. Russia was always a country of constant wars and great losses of its male population. We already know what great impact World War II and Soviet repressions had on Russia. Even nowadays when most countries enjoy peace and economical progress, Russia still participates in the war in Chechnya and has just recovered from the war with Afghanistan. For young Russian men there is no escape from being a soldier and being sent to Chechnya. The chances of returning home alive or in a good health are small. At the age of 18 Russian men must serve in the army for two years. It is mandatory and there is no chance of staying home and volunteering for nurseries or hospitals. The multiple meetings and strikes of Russian mothers protesting their sons obligation to the Russian army have still had no results. The Russian government does not promote an alternative to army service. The increasing gender imbalance is not only a result of losses due to wars but also because the health of Russian males is only becoming worse through the years. Tuberculoses infections, HIV, and sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis have risen dramatically over the past decade. Other principal factors for the decline of the male population in Russia are increased alcohol abuse, stress, smoking, accidents, suicide and crime. In every country men are always considered to be weaker by nature, and they are weaker statistically. In comparison to women, they die more often from heart attacks, stroke, cancer and other illnesses which women tend to overcome. In a country such as Russia where there is a huge gender imbalance at birth, looking for a partner at the age of fertility is a very difficult task. Even if a Russian woman succeeds in finding a partner, she is at a greater risk of losing him by the age of retirement than a woman from a Western country. This situation arises from life expectancy in modern Russia. Today, the life expectancy for Russian women is 72 years and only 59 for men - one of the lowest in Europe...
