Asthma In Infants On The Increase According To The CDC

By Timothy H. Jackson Sadly, asthma in infants, and children in general, is on the increase. The Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, GA, studied asthma between 1980 and 1998 and arrived at two alarming conclusions: * The first is that asthma increased in infants by a whopping 138% * In the early 1980s, the average age for the first recognition of asthma was the age of three to five years but by 1998, this age had decreased to only one year. No one is certain why this trend is increasing, although there are numerous ideas that center around such factors as 1. Air quality
2. Exposure to second hand smoke
3. Nutritional deficiencies But what is undeniable is that infant asthma is on the rise - perhaps a very steep rise. Diagnosis of Infant Asthma Obviously, diagnosis is more difficult in an infant asthma patient than any other. The sufferer cannot tell anyone that he is having difficulty breathing and cannot rest at night. Plus, a normal asthma test cannot be administered to a baby, obviously. In infants and adults, asthma is the same - that is, the lungs are abnormally sensitive to stimuli that cause breathing difficulty. In infants, these "triggers" can be: * Any kind of cold or respiratory inflammation
* Cold, wintry, freezing air
* Excessive excitement or over-stimulation
* Rapid temperature changes, such as those that occur in spring or autumn
* Classic allergens like pet fur and dander, dust, mold, insects
* Stress, which can be present in any life - even an infant's
* And, especially, exposure to cigarette smoke
* Lack of enough rest It is the duty of parents to be alert to any sign of infant asthma, although most often this condition is discovered by accident. The concerned parent may take her child to the pediatrician believing that her baby has bronchitis, only to discovered that the true culprit is asthma. There is good news, though, in the war against asthma in infants and the first positive note is that the child's life doesn't have to change much. Mom & Dad are the ones who will be responsible for regular doctor visits, schedules and any necessary medication. Another positive note is that asthma deaths are extremely rare among babies. In fact, the older that patient is, the more the death rate increases. However, the death rate from asthma is low at any age. According to the American Lung Association, 154 children below the age of 15 dies in 2003, while 671 adults over the age of 85 died. Asthma need not be a problem, even for an infant. With proper care and attention, it is a manageable annoyance rather than a crisis. How to Banish Bad Breath

By Ryan Arsendatama You can banish bad breath naturally by using home remedies. Along side using herbs to get rid of bad breath, you need to continue to brush your teeth, gums and tongue after meals. Bad breath can be quite embarrassing at any given point of time. Bad breath is caused by the presence of oral bacteria. However, there are other causes of bad breath too, like onions, garlic, smoking, dryness of the mouth, and gum disease. More people suffer from xerostomia, which is, basically, dryness in the mouth. It occurs during sleep or if you have been speaking for a longer time. The saliva is a special kind of mouth moisture that kills oral bacteria. Get Rid of Bad Breath Naturally Bad breath, in medical terms, is known as halitosis. You can banish bad breath naturally by using home remedies. They are effective and do not have any side effects. Along side using herbs to get rid of bad breath, you need to continue to brush your teeth, gums and tongue after meals. Some of the useful herbs and tips on how to banish bad breath are: 1. Wash your mouth with water, sage leaves, mint leaves, and parsley, to rid yourself of common bad breath. They are effective reducers of bad breath. 2. Frankincense, also known as Boswellia carterii, is a herb that has antibacterial capabilities. It is mainly used for treatment of sores and toothaches. 3. Cardamom seeds add sweetness to your breath, and are widely used as a breath freshener. 4. Drinking tea made from Fenugreek seeds helps to remove bad breath. 5. Parsley, whose Latin name is Petroselinum sativum, is more than just a green vegetable. Chewing parsley will get you fresh breath naturally. 6. There are certain types of herbs and spices, which are natural breath enhancers and are used in cooking. Some of them are cloves, fennel, or anise seeds and you can carry them in a pouch and chew them after meals. 7. You can chew some fresh breath herbs like wintergreen, spearmint or peppermint. They have a mint flavor and are soothing to the throat. 8. Commiphora molmol, Latin for myrrh, is also used for bad breath. It can be taken to cure infections in the mouth, teeth, gums and throat. It is very effective for toothaches. 9. Even fruits, such as Guava will help you reduce the intensity of bad breath. These are some of the natural ways to kill that embarrassing odor. If you are able to use them regularly, then you can rid yourself of bad breath. Understand the causes of halitosis is the first step in fighting halitosis smartly. The Benefits Of A Distance Learning Associate Degree

By Ian Henman Education is a very important part of todays job hunt process, not just for you but also for employers. The days are gone where you could put in your time to keep a secure place in the work force, todays employers are hiring younger employees right out of college with degrees that suit them to jobs that were once held by experienced workers. The question is what can you do about it to stay ahead of the curve. The answer is in distance learning and associate degrees. An Associate Degree What is it?
What heck is an associate degree? Simply put it's like half and undergraduate degree, spanning 2 years and about 60 credit hours in the field of your choice. Like an undergrad degree you can enroll for an associates degree in an array of facilities including science, and business. The big step that has occurred most recently in associate degree studies the the chance to enroll in an online college to complete a program while maintaining employment at your current job. Earn your Distance Learning Associate Degree
Of course there's no arguing that the Internet has made all of our lives a heck of a lot easier, from banking to communicating with old friends. Now you can take it one step further and simplify how you attain your education. By enrolling with an online education center you can take a distance learning associate degree in the same time frame you'd complete it at a brick and mortar school but on your own terms. The majority of those that do take distance learning courses over the Internet do so because they don't have the free time to enroll at a traditional college and free up the required time for traveling, studying, and pre scheduled class times. Taking courses via the Internet simplifies everything by studying from the comfort of your own home, and earning your associate degree step by step in your free time. Before handing any money over to an educational center claiming to offer distance learning associate degrees be sure to do your home work on the school. There are fake schools out there attempting to pass themselves off as accredited when in fact the degree you'd earn from them wouldn't be worth the paper the diploma is printed on. Each state has accreditation bodies, that certify schools that they are allowed and recognized to be offering the programs they do. Be sure that the distance learning associate degree and schools is accredited before registering. There are numerous resources on the Internet along with the schools themselves that allow you to requrest free information about programs, enrollment and financial assistance. Take advantage of these sites in your search for the right school for your distance learning associate degree. For more information about associate degrees, distance learning and online degrees take the time to visit our website and resources offered on distance edcuation and online degees. Know Your Man: Great Expectations

By Maria Moratto Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. ~ Truman Capote One day I was having a great conversation with my friend Linda over lunch and we were discussing precisely this point. She came up with this great analogy. She said: "If I asked you for a banana right now, could you give me one?" "Of course not," I replied. "Why?" she asked again, in which I replied: "Because I dont have one now; in fact, I dont even have one in my house! To be honest, I dont appreciate bananas so I could never give you one, unless I go out of my way to buy it for you." There. A man cant give what he doesnt have...and neither can a woman. In my case, I wanted my men to give me love, fidelity, appreciation, devotion, loyalty, understanding, etc., etc., etc., but how could they give me these things if they didnt have it to give to me? Perhaps they did give all these things and more to other better suited women, but not to me, and I have to face the fact that the men I loved were the wrong men for me, for So I learned that there is such a thing as the "right man;" we only need to desire him and let him in our lives. Many women get angry because their men dont give them what they need. How about understanding that it is not possible to receive from those who cant give? If we expect to receive what they dont have to give, we end up living with disappointment and resentment. Then anger mounts, and then unhappiness sets in, followed by unwillingness and hatred and soon we see that we have destroyed our relationship. Now, what if you want something your man cant give you? Worse, what if you need something that your man cant give you? That means you are related to the wrong man. Of course you realize that the reverse is also true. How many times can you count when you were asked to give you didnt have? And now for the million dollar question: how late is it to realize you have the wrong man in our life? Can you live without? A Word of Advice
Ladies and Gents: How willing are you to live with someone who cant give you what you need? What concessions are you willing to make and where do your compromises lie? Is it time for a renewal or dissolution of your vows? Maria Moratto 2006

How to Grow Organic Tomatoes

By Joanna Simmons There are many rewards for tackling the back yard pass time of growing tomatoes:
working our hands in the dirt is a form of meditation,
it carries on traditions of our ancestors,
and it slows our world down enough to enjoy spending some time with family and friends as we raise our tomato plants from infancy to maturity ... together, as my sister and I will be doing today. Why choose organic. Simple. When your kid is playing soccer in the backyard or jumping around on the trampoline, they can walk over to your beautiful tomatoes still resting on its vine and have a snack before going back to their play. This will cause you no concern. You used nothing while growing your tomatoes that will harm your family. Of course, that is getting ahead of ourselves. The reason we are visiting today about how to grow organic tomatoes is because we are not world class gardeners. My sisters green thumb feeds her family; my green thumb killed a cactus. I imagine you fall somewhere in between. So, whatever gardening knowledge you bring to the table, join us in this simple process. Together we are going to raise some beautiful tomato plants. What day you can start planting: To find out what day you can start planting, you will need to know the last frost date for your area. The best site we have found to give you this information is: http://www.usagardener.com/ Count back from the last frost date you found and count back seven to ten weeks. That will be the date you can start your seeds. To start you will need: * Compost. Free if from your garden as we are going to use today. * Peat. Cost about $10.50 * One of the following: Hummis, dirt, top soil, potting soil. Approximate cost $3.00 It may take some time to find one of these without some version of Miracle Grow. * Organic seeds. Cost varies. Average about $2.69 Lisas favorite seed companies that carry organic tomato seeds: Seeds of Change and Seed Savers. * Bucket to mix compost, peat and Hummis in. * Seed starter tray. We have chosen one with pop-out cells, a bottom tray that holds water, and a plastic cover. * Popsicle sticks or something of the sort for labeling. * Heating pad. (optional) - Hand mix compost, Hummis, and Peat in bucket. Peat keeps the dirt mixture moist, keeping it from clumping together. Fertilizer is not necessary. It can cause the plant to burn. Besides the seeds and dirt have everything necessary to grow and be healthy. - Fill seed starter tray with mix. Evenly spread covering all the cells to the rim. - Use your finger to make a small hole, approximately inch in every cell to place your seeds in. - We place two seeds in each hole. - Then gently recover the hole. To wrap things up, fill bottom tray with water, replace seed cell tray, and cover with plastic lid. Place your trays somewhere warm. Our favorite spot is the kitchen. If you decided to buy the heating pad, place your tray on that. Check your water level several times over the next few hours. The dirt will need to soak up the water. It will take about 6 to 10 days for your seeds to germinate. Watch for your seeds to show even the smallest sign that their starting to pop their heads up. This is when you must take the plastic lid off. Otherwise, they will start to dampen off and wilt. You will also start giving your tomato plants less water; walk the fine line of not letting them dry out. When your plants start to gain their true leaves we will touch base again. Our next step will be to transplant our tomato plants to peat pods. Peat pods will give room for the roots to grow. Together, we are on our way. Healthcare Claims Management Made Easy

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Skip_Freedman] Skip Freedman If you're a claims manager or adjuster workers comp, auto, health or disability insurance, one of the scarcest resources you have is your time. When you have complex and costly cases, your time gets eaten up adjudicating claims and consulting others for opinions. If you find yourself in positions where you're stretched too thin, a great way to extend your capabilities and to move your most difficult cases through your organization is to use the services of an Independent Review Organization. Independent Review Organizations are dedicated to providing medical decision support to claims payers of all types on healthcare benefits or on medical benefits related to specific treatments. An Independent Review Organization provides an external, objective medical review service for insurance carriers, Third Party Administrators, and other types of payers. Independent Review Organizations help them allocate their resources effectively and provide decisions about the approval and denial of treatments. Independent Review Organizations are typically accredited by a URAC (at least the good ones are). They provide a panel of external peer physicians in all specialties and sub-specialties who are capable of providing standard or expedited reviews of health care cases by determining their medical necessity, standard of care, whether they are experimental or investigational, whether they indicate an appropriate length of stay in hospitals and other types of questions that a doctor must review. The Independent Review Organization always matches the case with a specialist having the same background as the referring specialist. Independent Review Organization specialists are always board certified, licensed and in active practice. This insures is that you will be able to use the same expert knowledge to make your claims decision as was originally applied to the treatment being considered. It allows you to speed up your claims decision making, eliminate unnecessary medical treatment, reduce premium costs for disability and workers comp and ensure that your claims resources are being allocated to members who deserve the care, and not those who dont. So if you're a claims manager and you're not using an Independent Review Organization today to evaluate claims inside your organization, consider one. About AllMed Healthcare Management Founded in 1995, AllMed is a URAC-accredited Independent Review Organization (IRO) serving insurance payers, providers, TPAs and claims managers nationwide. Make A Statement With A Destination Wedding

By Amy Spade The newest trend in weddings is to get out of townliterally. Destination weddings are the latest rage because the couple gets to exchange their vows in private or with just a select few friends. Heres how to do it. Getting on a plane A destination wedding isnt a destination wedding unless youre off to somewhere exotic and remote. You might pick a tropical island like Hawaii or somewhere in Bali. Perhaps the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest or the deserts of Australia call to you. This is your dream, pick exactly what you want. Realize that the farther that you go, the less people will want to or be able to come with you. And this might be exactly what youre looking for--just a simple wedding with you and your soon-to-be spouse. In either case, you will still want to send out announcements of your wedding date so that your friends and family will know. In many cases, you can get married at the destination wedding, and then have a reception when you get home. Why these are popular Destination weddings take away a lot of the traditional planning of the traditional wedding. There arent the crowds of people to meet and greet. There arent the floral and cake and decoration meetings. In most cases, these resorts will do everything for you so you get to relax and enjoy your day. And the pictures that you will have from this wedding day. How many others can say that they were married in front of a waterfall or the setting sun on the ocean? Its the scenery that brings people to destination weddings because its unlike anything that they could have created in their hometown. A move toward ancient culture tradition is also in vogue. Many couples are being married by the native priests and ministers in the traditional ways of the tribes that live there. In Hawaii, you can be married in the Polynesian tradition, with a hula dance and everything. Being able to invite only those people that you love is a great way to enter into married life together. The settings are intimate and private, so you can just enjoy each other. Destination weddings can be expensive weddings for your family to attend, so you may want to turn on a video camera when the actual vows are exchanged. Then go on your honeymoon, enjoy yourself, and go back home to celebrate with your family. Ligaments, Vertebral Arteries and the Sub Occiput-Their Role in Structural Integrity

By Michael C. Nelson The structural health of the neck is not just the maintenance of muscles, but the maintenance of; (1) The Ligaments; That support the vertebrae but have a minimal blood supply, unlike muscle tissue. Ligaments are the tissue system that binds bones together supporting joints and regulating their range of movement. Being poor in blood supply, they do not heal easily and are prone to calcium deposits, causing wear and tear arthritic changes to the joints. This can cause friction against the wall of the Vertebral Arteries as they pass through the Cervical Vertebrae wearing the wall thin and or, impeding the flow. Ligaments need deep massage and traction to promote good blood supply, full ranges of movement and the re-absorption of calcium deposits. (2) The Vertebral Arteries travel up through the vertebral foramina of each cervical vertebra. They enter the spine at the level of the 6th cervical vertebra (base of the neck) and travel up to the head where, to get into the cranium the vertebral arteries take, Two 90degree turns to supply about two thirds of the blood supply to the brain - which needs a minute to minute supply of glucose and oxygen to maintain its normal function. The vertebral arteries supply the deeper, autonomic centers of the brain, if the blood supply is diminished to these areas we have all types of dysfunctional conditions arising particularly as we age! If you can help to maintain the structural integrity of your cervical spine (neck) and therefore the blood supply to your brain the better you are going to be getting older as gravity grinds us ALL into the ground the inexorable factor. People forget that GRAVITY is the main reason we need 8 hours sleep a day and that our Rigging is our best way to pass this force through us, with as little wear and tear as possible. (3) The area known as the Sub Occiput is the level of the neck where the spine articulates with the base of the head, or cranium. Traction and deep inhibition to this area can affect our function through the many important physiological centers that are situated at the top of the neck. The Carotid sinus, at the top of the Carotid arteries carries the other third of the blood supply to the brain. This collection of nerves controls feedback information from the hearts pumping, for regulation of blood pressure. The 10th cranial nerve The Vagus Nerve leaves the cranium in this region and is one half of the control on the hearts rate of beating. The vagal nerve supplies rhythmic nerve impulses/control to the motor functions of most of the gastro-intestinal system, our peristalsis or gut motion. The amount of muscle investment in the Sub Occiput is great it needs to turn the head very quickly with control, it needs to hold the heaviest part of our body on the top of two small condyles and not impair that blood supply or pinch those nerve. These muscles are intimately connected to the muscles of mastication and all the emotional elements that the mouth and jaw can bring up that makes us grind our teeth at night or clench so tight we wake with a pounding headache. The Sub Occiput can be tight when we go to bed, impairing our sleep and even tighter the next morning, the impairment of blood supply can be debilitating, the whole cycle repeating more and more intensely each day. There are so many control mechanisms in the Sub Occipital Region and the rest of the neck and spine, that normal structural integrity is very, very important to the normality of most of our Function. Most professional Physical Therapists, which are Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Naturopaths and Masseurs have this knowledge, spend a little time to get to know a good one and you will have a much stronger armory to approach Diss-ease and generally live a better quality of life. Dr M.C.Nelson.D.O. A Melbourne Osteopath, trained in the U.K. at the European School of Osteopathy. Qualified in 1981, worked in private practice and lecturing in technique to French Physiotherapists in England, before returning to Australia and work in sports medicine clinics such as Brighton spinal and sports medicine clinic. Started to develop Dr Nelson's S.O.S. from http://www.sosheadache.com during the late eighties-early nineties with a strong interest in headaches and peoples ability to heal themselves. Why You Should Hire a Display Stand

By Charles Ferrars If you are attending your first trade show and are unsure about committing cash to purchase customized exhibition stands for what could turn out to be a one-off event then hiring your display stands makes perfect sense. They can also be an ideal, cost effective solution if you are working to a tight budget, as many displays can be tailor made to suit your needs, whatever the dimension of floor space your trade booth has been allocated. Despite the restrictions imposed by budget, giving your trade booth a visually stimulating and eye-catching appearance is easy as there are literally unlimited combinations of displays available for you to choose from. They come in all shapes and sizes and whatever advertising function you need them to perform there are displays that are perfect for the job: - folding & modular stands
- poster & clip frames
- a-frame signboards
- tabletop counters
- pop-up systems
- literature stands
- cable displays
- banner stands
- workstations
- roll-up stands
- podiums
- plinths For example: roll-up banner stands are suitable for use at any kind of trade show and most are supplied with graphics and a headline, making them an excellent marketing tool. Podiums, plinths and workstations can be extremely useful, especially if your exhibition space is limited. Modular and folding display stands are also a good choice as they are available in a number of sizes - modular displays can be swapped between portrait or landscape formats to fit your available floor space - and professionally exhibit your own graphics, posters and advertising banners. In addition these systems are very lightweight and therefore easily portable. This is another big advantage to renting your trade show stands as they are, generally speaking, easier to erect and dismantle than a purpose built static display system. At the outset renting your display stands makes sound, economic sense and once you have established if exhibiting at trade shows has been a successful marketing exercise then you can look into creating and buying custom display stands for your business. Charles Ferrars writes about Exhibition Stands for RAL Display - one of the Uks leading suppliers of portable exhibition stands, banner stands and accessories. Handling a Hurricane; Part 1 - The Threat of a Hurricane - Are You At Risk?

By Graham McClung For sustained violence, no form of weather beats a major hurricane. With wind speeds which may exceed 155mph (240 kph), torrential rain, destructive waves and storm surges which can raise sea level by 20 feet or more, their power is enormous, and they should never be taken lightly. North America can claim to be the hurricane centre of the world. Every year hurricanes develop in the South Atlantic and make their way through the Caribbean, usually growing as they move westwards. They start off as small disturbances with moderate winds and thunderstorms. Those that keep growing and develop a spiral wind pattern are classified as Tropical Storms and given a name. They will keep this name whether or not they intensify into a hurricane, for as long as they remain a threatening weather system. As Caribbean islands are battered, the mainland of North America holds its collective breath. Will the hurricane reach the Gulf of Mexico, swing further north to cross the Atlantic Coast of the USA, or take a northward track and stay at sea? Will it be a relatively minor Category 1 hurricane, or will it grow to a devastating Category 5, like Camille in 1969. But no matter how they are classified, all hurricanes are a threat to life and property. Each hurricane is different, although all are notable for strong winds and heavy rains. More information can be found at http://www.home-weather-stations-guide.com/hurricanes.html Hurricanes can cause problems in five ways; Strong Winds. Sustained wind speed is one of the main ways of classifying hurricanes. Category 1 hurricanes bring winds of 74-95 mph (119-153kph), Category 3, classified as a major hurricane, blows at 111-130mph (178-209kph), and the winds of Category 5 monsters exceed a devastating 155mph (249 kph). At these speeds many roofs and some complete buildings will be destroyed. Storm Surge. Storm surge is mostly caused by strong winds driving sea water ahead of them, resulting in an increase in sea level. Because winds rotate anticlockwise around hurricanes, storm surges are highest within and to the left of its eye as viewed from landfall. Becasue they are wind related, they show a steady increase in height from low to high category hurricanes, from 3-5 feet in Category 1, through 9-12 feet in Category 3 to surges in excess of 18 feet (5.5m) in a Category 5 hurricane. Strong Waves. On top of the storm surge come strong destructive waves. They are more notable for their speed and roughness than their size, because the high winds tend to blow the tops off them, but they are capable of significant damage in exposed situations. Flooding Rains. Hurricanes are composed of thick bands of turbulent, rain laden clouds. Thunder and lightning are common, but the main result is long periods of torrential rain, inevitably leading to flooding, particularly when combined with storm surge. Thunderstorms, including tornadoes. Although thunder and lightning are commonly seen with hurricanes, most destruction comes from the hurricane winds. But as the hurricane moves inland, it loses power and becomes disorganized. At this stage, when the atmosphere is still unstable, powerful storm cells may form, bringing violent winds, heavy rain, and often tornadoes to more inland areas. This means is that the coastal fringe will be most affected by a hurricane, with the degree and area of severe damage increasing with increasing severity of the storm, particularly from Category 3 upward. Evacuation may be ordered as Category 3 or higher hurricanes approach, although mobile homes are in danger even in Category 2 hurricanes. In a Category 3 storm, low lying areas within a few blocks of the shoreline will probably be evacuated, increasing to 5-10 miles (8-16km) for a Category 5 hurricane. As the severity of the hurricane increases, so does the extent of damage by both wind and storm surge, including the damaging effect of floating debris. Low lying areas may be flooded, and roads cut, 3-5 hours before the arrival of the center of the hurricane, so although there is considerable warning of a hurricane's approach, the time available for safe evacuation is quickly reduced. I am sure anyone who has experienced a hurricane is keenly aware of its power, and the speed with which conditions can deteriorate. But its affect on you can be greatly reduced with a little careful planning before the hurricane season, as well as well thought out action in the brief period of time between a hurricane warning and the start of disruption to access routes and damage to property. 2005, Graham McClung. Are Pharmaceutical Sales Reps Really Needed?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joshua_Daly] Joshua Daly Aside from a few free samples, some cheap pens and calendars, or maybe a sweet magnet to put on your fridge, is there truly a need for pharmaceutical sales reps? The pharmaceutical industry currently employs over 100,000 drug sales reps. Despite the currently inflated number of drug sales reps, some of the major pharmaceutical companies may be moving in a new direction. Pfizer, who began the pharmaceutical sales rep drug race many years ago has decided to retool their company in order to save money. Pfizer has announced that it will be cutting back its pharmaceutical sales force worldwide by 10%, which translates into over 10,000 reps getting the axe. Apparently drug reps arent too confident in what they are bringing to the table. A post on the website CafePharma was brought to my attention by John Mack of the Pharma Marketing Blog. Reps are first to cut because (1) there are too many of them, (2) they get paid too much, (3) they are less and less effective. That's not me saying these things, that's the reps themselves saying this: "Hey chief, I've been in this game for 10 years, and guess what: 1.) We don't provide value anymore. 2.) Without the sales and marketing arms, drug prices would go down. 3.) Charity and patient assistance would be the same. 4.) The docs could sure as shit get their samples directly from the company. 5.) The public, congress, and consumer advocacy groups would stop hating us because the most visible part of the industry, i.e., you and your little rolly bag, would not be front and center to the 65 year old man with diabetes in the waiting room. I think that pharmaceutical sales reps may be seeing the end of the road soon. Pfizers layoffs are in effect telling the other drug manufactures that the arms race is off. Since they are the company that usually sets the tone in the industry, it would not be a surprise to see the other pharmaceutical companies follow suite. Why Collect Science Fiction Books?

By Alan Chudnow It all begins with sense of wonder. At some point it hits you, an almost magical attraction to books. It may be books by a particular author or books about a distinctly engaging concept or it may be the sheer joy of holding a unique volume with a compelling physical appeal. However it happens, what ever causes it, there is an upwelling of affection and a sudden sense of wonder. It is important to keep in mind that almost all book collectors begin as readers. Readers become collectors when they find that the books themselves have become important objects in and of themselves. The book has transcended the state of being merely a vehicle for passing on the authors stories and thoughts and becomes an object with intrinsic beauty and value. Object and content enhance each other, heightening the unique experience the book brings to its owner. By most accounts, the origin of Science Fiction as a distinct literary genre dates back to 1926, when Hugo Gernsback started publishing what he called "scientifiction" in a new magazine known as Amazing Stories. Gernsback said,
sense of wonder comes not from brilliant writing, nor even from brilliant conceptualizing; it comes from a sudden opening of a closed door in the reader's mind.
Collecting the objects that initiated that amazement is the best way to keep it vivid, alive and immediately accessible. Consumers vs. Collectors Almost all Science Fiction and Fantasy book collectors begin as readers. This is an important point for by far the largest numbers of F&SF readers see books as consumables. They are content with reading a library copy or a paperback reprint and think of the book as simply a medium for conveying the authors subject matter and deserve no more consideration than that. Most readers use, and often abuse, the book as they please, dog-ear corners, make notes in the margins, bend the covers back and break the spine. For them, books are as disposable as a McDonalds hamburger wrapper. They are book consumers. For such readers things like the edition of a book, or its condition dont matter. They perceive little difference between a hardcover first printing and a paperback reprint. The joy they receive from a book, and one must acknowledge that very real pleasure, comes from the authors content alone. All other considerations are inconsequential. The Book as an object of beauty and inspiration For those of us who are not book consumers but book collectors, the joy of the text is but one of several delights in a book. Look, feel, the very tactile uniqueness of a volume elevate the book from simple container to an object of physical beauty and romance which augments the thoughts and ideas of its author. We take care of our books like we would other valuable objects. We treat them gently, store them properly and do our best to protect them from injury. The very act of owning our books, being able to take them down off the shelf, turn them over in our hands and take pleasure in their presence, enriches our lives and gives continued delight. Most collectors of Science Fiction books begin to do so because they have found something in the genre that is inspiring. Science Fiction stretches your imagination, introduces you to a future of endless possibilities and creates a sense of wonder. Included within the realm of Science Fiction are also Fantasy books that take you into the world of magic and myth and Magic Realism books where everyday life is transformed into the supernatural, while yet remaining grounded in reality. Science Fiction Collections can be valuable There are other reasons to collect Science Fiction and Fantasy books, the economic value among them. As the popularity of science continues to grow at an astonishing rate the value and desirability of first edition and limited edition Science Fiction books continues to intensify as well. First editions and limited runs ensure that availability decreases over time. There exists a large expanding market for books. A carefully assembled collection of first edition or limited print volumes will become increasingly valuable. Why collect books? Collect them because they engage your sense of wonder. Collect them because they are beautiful. Collect them because they are valuable. Most important of all, collect them because you love them. Alan Chudnow has been collecting books for over 30 years. He was one of the original partners in Dangerous Visions, a speculative fiction specialty bookstore in Sherman Oaks, California. Now sadly gone the way of most independent bookshops in this country. He has been, at various times a motion picture and television film editor, theatrical producer and director, writer, actor, web designer and bookstore owner, all while continuing his pursuit of bibliophilism. He lives in Long Beach, California as close to the beach as he can get. SF Bookworm is a Blog concerning Science Fiction, Book Collecting and more. Strengthening the Grandparent Bond

By Nancy Samalin Grandparents are an important part of every childs life because they can give a valuable gift: unconditional love. A warm, strong bond can enrich the lives of both generations. To succeed, it takes a partnership between parents and grandparents. Both need to respect each others role and keep the childs best interest in mind. The mutual goal should be to encourage the bond between child and grandparent without putting Mom and Dad in an awkward middle position: Some suggestions: Watch out for overindulgence. Its natural for grandparents to drop in, shower gifts on the kids, and then go home. Grandparents need to recognize that this can hurt parents, who need to maintain daily discipline. Before bringing gifts or treats, grandparents could ask if their plan is okay with the parents. If grandparents tend to overindulge a child, parents can let them know how important they are in the childs life, but emphasize that affection and attention are more important than gifts. A parent might say, You dont have to buy Roger a new toy whenever you visit. What he really loves is going to the playground with you. Know the ground rules, but expect some flexibility. If grandparents are lax about enforcing parents rules, parents should remember the priority is to let a child develop a close, lasting relationship with grandparents. This can be difficult if you say, Its time for bed, and Grandpa says, Oh, let her stay up another hour. Its a challenge if both child and grandparent align themselves against a parent, as when Grandma slips a child candy and says, Dont tell your Dad. Grandparents should know what the parents rules are and not undercut them. But theres room for flexibility as long as both parents and grandparents agree in advance. For example, if bedtime is 9 p.m. at home, parents could okay a 10 oclock bedtime when the child visits Grandma on the weekend. It helps to relax some rules when grandparents are around but parents should make it clear ahead of time that this is a special occasion. For example, When Grandpa visits this weekend, you wont have to go to bed quite so early or we may have some special treats we dont usually have. Parents can step out of the way for a while and let child and grandparent enjoy their time together. Watch the criticism. In many families, grandparents still carry old criticisms of their adult child (Youre so unorganized), while parents still hang on to old reproaches from their youth (Youre too rigid) Voicing critical words in front of children can be harmful, especially if the discord focuses on how parents are raising their children. Parents need to accept that many grandparents are unlikely to change. Its best to listen but if the criticism seems unwarranted, reply with a non-committal, Uh-huh. If a grandparent expresses differing opinions about health or food issues, a parent can simply say, The pediatrician said Sometimes parents reject a grandparents directions because they resent the interference, but Grandpa may have some good advice. A useful tactic for parents: Occasionally ask for opinions before theyre offered. Grandparents should remember to keep their advice to a minimum. When it is invited, express it in non-critical words. If its rejected, drop it. Focus on the childs best interests. Its common for grandparents to voice disapproval of a childs dress, language, or behavior. But the bond between them is often damaged because grandparents dont recognize how important their views are to a child. Parents can remind grandparents in a non-confrontational way, I know you dislike the way Suzie dresses, but it hurts her feelings when you comment about it, and she really cares what you think of her. Try not to play favorites. Its impossible to like all children equally, but its important not to show favoritism that hurts a childs feelings. Some grandparents are more comfortable with girls than boys and vice versa, or enjoy older rather than younger kids. Many grandparents may not realize theyre harming the less preferred child. The solution is as simple as becoming aware of the unintended favoritism. If parents or grandparents notice that theyre showering one child with extra attention, try to foster a relationship with the other child by playing games or going to a movie with that child alone. Gradually, the relationship will grow, or another grandparent may step in to show more attention to that child. Build upon common interests. If a grandparent is uninvolved or ignores a grandchild, both parent and child feel hurt. Many parents expect grandparents to be doting, bake cookies, and always be available to babysit, but their lifestyles and personalities dont always fit the parents ideals. Both parents and grandparents need to be aware of these differences, respect them, but at the same time discover ways to strengthen the child-grandparent bond in ways that are comfortable to both. Look for activities suited to the grandparents interests. If Grandpa is an avid golfer, maybe hed enjoy taking the kids to a miniature golf course once in a while. If Grandma loves to read, she could take the kids to the library. Such directed activities enable grandparent and child discover common interests more than simply spending unstructured time at home. Dont give up if your efforts to strengthen the grandparent-grandchild bond seem to stall. Keep trying, but it may take more time until children are older and both generations discover more in common. Two thought to keep in mind: Grandparents, a little spoiling is fine, but dont undercut the childs parents. Parents, sometimes youll need to step out of the way and allow children and grandparents to grow closer by allowing their relationship develop on its own. Outdoor Heaters -- Pros, Cons, and Tips

By Anne Clarke Outdoor heaters are becoming more and more popular in residential settings. Once, generally found only in restaurant settings, outdoor heaters are now big hits in middle class neighborhoods, as well. Are you considering purchasing outdoor heaters for your own home? Before you do so, learn more about the pros and cons associated with outdoor heaters, as well as some tips. Compared to outdoor fire pits and chimneas, outdoor heaters release fewer emissions. Also, after sitting around an outdoor heater all night, neither you nor your guests will smell like a campfire! Also compared to outdoor fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and chimneas, there are more ongoing costs associated with outdoor heaters. -- If you have a gas outdoor heater, you must pay for refills of gas. -- Electric heaters require the quartz to replaced about every 7 years (and your electricity bill will go up). -- Also, there are more maintenance fees associated with both outdoor heaters and electric heaters. Although they are durable, it is still much easier to break a patio heater than an outdoor fireplace! Mushroom or umbrella outdoor heaters are most effective if there is no wind. A little bit of wind can make a big difference on how warm the area surrounding the heater is. Also, with gas heaters, wind can make flame move toward and damage internal components. To avoid problems with wind, it is best to set up your outdoor heater near walls, fences, and overhangs (making sure to still keep it at least 2 feet from walls and ceilings read the warning and instructions before setting up the heater.) Mushroom heaters are good because they reflect the heat down and out, where you want it to be. But moisture (especially salt air or chlorine air) can be hard on them. Buts can also be a problem, climbing into the burner orifices and the pilot light. Fingerprints can burn into the mushroom reflector surface. When not using your mushroom outdoor heater, be sure to store it away and/or place a heater cover over it. Mushroom/umbrella outdoor heaters put out more heat than directional outdoor heaters, but directional outdoor heaters can easily be mounted to many different surfaces, making them easy to set up and use. They are not affected by wind. They cost less, and bugs are not so much of a problem with them. An outdoor heater with wheels is much easier to move around than one without wheels! If you already have a natural gas line in your home, you may consider setting up a natural gas outdoor heater directly to it. Of course, if you do so, you will have fewer options as to which area of your patio you can heat up. When deciding what type of outdoor heater to get butane, propane, natural gas, etc. consider first where the closest suppliers are to you. Choose whatever type will be most convenient. You will find multiple uses for any outdoor heater you choose to buy: -- Set one up outside so that smokers do not feel too shunned or cold when they must step outside for a smoke. -- Make sure that outside barbecues and parties can last longer, with guests feeling comfortable. -- Extend the length of seasons that you can use your porch start using your porch earlier in the spring and later in the fall. Be sure that cool summer evenings are heated as well. -- Use your outdoor heater in the morning when you want to sit outside, breath in the fresh morning air, and drink your coffee. -- Turn on your outdoor heater when you are completing outdoor projects you do not want to accidentally pound your hand with a hammer because your fingers were too numb to grip it properly! Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for websites on gardening, parenting, fashion, and sports. Her background includes home decor and gardening. Great Places To Go Fishing In Texas

By Bob Matsen If you like fishing you will like the different fish you can catch in Texas. Cutthroat, rainbow trout, lake trout, and brown trout can be caught in different locations in Texas The brown trout are considered the be the hardest to catch. There survival is attached to pure cold water. This trout is very sensitive to water temperature changes. If the water temperature goes up by a few degrees the trout will die off, or move to a different location. The rainbow trout are not affected as much by the water temperature changes should the water clarity get bad due to silt the fish will move out to the mouths of any stream with clear water This pink fleshy trout is the favorite with trout fishermen. It feeds on small flies but can be tempted to strike small lures and other baits. This fish will remain in the shallow water till it reaches about 9 inches then it will head out to the lakes or ocean. Once the trout have fattened up it will return to the streams from which they came. The fish are now called Steel head trout. If fishing for the Steel head trout you would use spoons rather than baits or flies. Use the current to you advantage and cast up stream and reel in at you regular speed being careful not to snag up as you reel in. You will find brook trout in clear clean water Their food source is small insects and mollusks. Sometimes they will take smaller fish or flies. You can get them to hit on a small lure if it is presented along the edge of the faster slowing water. You will find brook trout on the gravel beds of fast flowing water. They like waterfalls and large pools of water with a fast current on the out side of the pool. The fish tend to hang around between the current and the calmer water. If you find along a long the banks with fast flowing water and a deep pool you will find trout here. The Crappie fish is a member of the sunfish family. Depending where they are found will depend on their names. Paper mouth , goggleye, bridge perch and speckled perch just to mention a few. The black crappie is darker species and has 7 to 8 dorsal spines you will also find some with spotted sides. Normally they will be found in deeper water in the northern states. The white crappie has 6 dorsal spines and is light in color. There are eight or nine vertical bands found on its sides. Normally they can grow over the five pound mark. Crappie are school fish that like quite waters. You can catch them by still fishing casting , trolling, or drift fishing. Use live baits or a jig or a small crappie lure would be the best. If you find cover such as brush, stumps, in the area you are fishing. The best time to fish is at sunset for they will be on the surface. As the sun rises and the rays strikes the surface of the water the fish will normally dive down to 5 to 10 ft mark. Depending on the clarity of the water which will also determine the depth they dive to. Normally they will return to the deeper water after sun set. With all the different types of fish in Texas and along the coast of Texas you will find that you can spend as much of your time catch different fish from trout to crappie. Every stream pond lake or shore line can be a spot to catch many different fish. If you do not fish while in Texas you will be missing out on a experience that will be hard to beat any where else. Most locals will tell you what is hot and which baits to use. You will be able to rent the gear if you do not have any with you from the local tackle shop. Components of Cottage Garden Landscaping

By Caitlina Fuller A cottage garden is beautiful but it takes a lot of hard work and planning to end up with your dream garden. It is perhaps the very best option for anyone who enjoys a romantic looking garden and is willing to implement all of the cottage garden components and landscaping techniques in order to achieve the end result. Cottage gardens originally implemented some creative planting techniques in order to plant as many edible plants as possible in a very small area. However, cottage gardens were used not only to grow food but also for decoration because gardeners wanted to have a beautiful area. The result of edible plants and decorative plants combined resulted in the beautiful cottage garden we love today. If you are interested in planting a cottage garden of your own you can do so easily if you simply have a plan and follow your plan. You must consider what components are used in a cottage garden and how you can implement them. Things like paths made of interlocking pavers and walls made of vinyl fencing should all be made to appear as if they are just as old as the cottage. Otherwise it will be in distinct contrast to the cottage and your garden will not have that romantic feel. A rustic look is very important when it comes to cottage gardens. Lots of people have cottages that are recently constructed but made to look rustic and older. So, if you are creating a new cottage garden make sure the materials you use complement your cottage and blend in with the surroundings. When creating paths in your cottage garden use materials like local stones, cobbles, red brick, gravel, paving slabs, gravel, and other materials. Now, consider how old you want your garden to appear. Just because you are planting a cottage garden today does not mean that it has to look new. Instead you can use colors and plants to bring out an old fashioned look in your garden. There are lots of books and websites you can use as resources that will help you make your cottage garden look many years older than it really is. Some of the plants that are really perfect for a cottage garden include delphiniums, roses, honesty, geraniums, alius, peonies, carrots, buddleia, ornamental cabbage, corn, herbs like parsley, thyme, chives, dill, rosemary, and catmint. There are a lot of other components of cottage gardens and one of the most important ones is to plant miniature hedges around the different sections of the garden so that no matter what time of year it is the garden will look beautiful. Caitlina Fuller is a freelance writer. You must consider what components are used in a cottage garden and how you can implement them. Things like paths made of interlocking pavers, laws with Aspen trees and walls made of vinyl fencing should all be made to appear as if they are just as old as the cottage. Otherwise it will be in distinct contrast to the cottage and your garden will not have that romantic feel. A rustic look is very important when it comes to cottage gardens.
