The survey said that the primary reason why people are rejected on interviews is NOT for lack of skills competency, the primary reason people are rejected is that they talk too muchalmost 40%. Approximately 20% are rejected because they behave arrogantly on the interview. So, what does this say to you in how you should behave on an interview? Keep your answers to the point of the question Where possible, keep your answers to 30 45 seconds in length. For in-depth questions, you can speak for a minute. One of things you need to do in answering questions is to keep an eye out for rapport with the interviewer. If you sense you are losing them, ask a question that draws them back in. Always remember that your voice AND body language are sales tools when you interviewer. You want to demonstrate confidence but not arrogance when answering questions. Listen carefully to what is asked of you and what may be absent from what is asked of you. If the absent item might be critical to the answer, politely ask if they would like you to expand your answer to include it.

Business Brochure Writing: What is "Tone" and Why It's Important

By Sandra Eggers The tone of a written piece like your brochure can best be defined as the feel or emotional effect this piece has. Many things make up tone. The words you use in your brochure. The length of your sentences. The colors you use. The font. The punctuation. The type of graphics or photos. The graphic design.The type of paper you use. To give your brochure its proper tone, all of these elements need to come together, giving it one particular feel. Thats nice, I bet your saying right now. Wake me up when youre done with your artsy lecture. Whoa, pardner! Back up the Macor park your PC--right now & listen up. This is not some fancy-schmancy, high-falutin, artsy-fartsy, fuzzy-wuzzy concept. Its real. And it has real (read: bottomline) consequences. Ill start by describing an actual brochure I saw, one that Ive used as a very bad example, during the brochure workshops Ive given in the Detroit area. This brochure was on a very sensitive and heart wrenching topic: domestic violence. It was done by a metropolitan agency to either a.) make the public aware that domestic violence hurts children and is, by extension, child abuse b.) warn the perpetrators of the crime that it is, well, a crime. (For starters, this brochure was so poorly written, it was hard to decipher who it was aimed at. In fact, it stumped my workshop participants.) Now, writing this brochure unsure of the target market wasnt the least of its problems. Here is where we get to tone. It was a harsh 1-color (yes, 1-color--black type on white paper.It looked like something dashed off and photocopied.) brochure with large type & sentences that seemed to scream at you. The header read: There is NO Excuse, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Its A Crime! The word you was used, but in a harsh, high-handed tone: What you should know about . . . followed this screaming headline. It got your attention, alright. But its tone was so shrill and harsh, it didnt invite me in, to learn, to get help. It only pushed me away. So you see, tone is very important. Now, Ill explain another example also from a government agency and dealing with children that does a much, much better job. This brochure was 1-color also. Only it was done by a graphic artist who knew how to use many shades of grey, screens, and other techniques to make what was originally black into a soft, warm, inviting picture.
In the center of the brochure were black and white photos of 4 smiling children, each of a different race. Above the kids was the header: The Health Insurance You Need In the center of the kids was a circle with the words MIChild, the acronym for low-cost childrens insurance, playing on the zip code abbreviation for the state of Michigan. Instantly known to its target market. Then, at the bottom of the brochurestill on the coverwere the words At a Price You Can Afford, followed by the toll-free number. The whole tone of this brochure is We want to help you. We respect you. We understand you. (And thats just from reviewing the cover!) See the difference? Even though both brochures were from government agencies, even though both brochures were only 1 color, the difference between them is vast. As, Im sure, were the results. In these brief paragraphs, Ive given you just a tiny glimpse of what tone is and why its important. There are many more examples in kinds of tone; how each tone is accomplished with the words chosen, the sentence length and structure, the type of paper, etc.I hope, however, that in these brief paragraphs you can begin to understand tone and its importance. And, most important, you can understand how you can apply it to your own brochure. Are You Lonely? Tips That Will Change Your Life

In this whole wide world with over ten billion living homo sapiens, you are lonely?? Loneliness is taking epidemic proportions in the world today, said a renowned physiatrist to a hapless patient. Who cares she thought, I am the one who is lonely, so what do I care if the whole world is in the same boat. No one is riding alongside me right now. I read somewhere and I quote "See through the mist and find yourself, you need never be lonely again". All horse crap. All of us go through the bouts of loneliness and some of us just dont seem to get out of it. I agree that the world is lonely today and perhaps has always been. That does not solve my problem one little bit. I am lonely and I want something to happen before my loneliness take its toll on me and the people around me. Worry no further. Help is at hand. First and foremost we need to understand the concept of loneliness. I have known people who do not feel lonely living in jungles, while I have also encountered specimen (I too have suffered) who are lonely in a happening party with his girlfriend by his side and a wallet full of notes in his pocket. We begin by defining what do we mean by loneliness (sourced from Wikipedia ).
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than just the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected, and/or alienated from other people, so that it feels difficult or even impossible to have any form of meaningful human contact. Lonely people often feel empty or hollow inside. Feelings of separation or isolation from the world are common amongst those that are lonely. The first record of the word "lonely" being used was in a play by William Shakespeare. Loneliness should not be equated with being alone. Everyone has times when they are alone for situational reasons, or because they have chosen to be alone. Being alone could be experienced as positive, pleasurable, and emotionally nourishing if it is under the individual's control. Solitude is the state of being alone and secluded from other people, and often implies having made a conscious choice to be alone. But this is not about trying to understand the concept behind what is and what is not loneliness. It is about trying to come to an understanding about what to do when you are in such a bout which can, technically be termed as loneliness. Presented is a ten step strategy to come back to a normal state from the bouts of loneliness. These tips are assured to get you out of the gloom of unhappiness, brought about by a bout of loneliness, and on your way to a bright day. 1. Take a deep breath. Inhale and exhale. Let the tension in your body blow away. Repeat this five times. Let the oxygen content refill your lungs and refresh you to take the next step to happiness. Remember, breathing is the key to happiness. You need to keep breathing evenly throughout the ten steps. 2. Remember people around you. Try and think of them and visualize them talking nicely to you. Visualize you replying back, laughing, chatting with them. 3. Try and reach out the friend you trust most, or atleast trusted prior to coming into this stage. If you are not fine with this one, then go to the next best in the order till you home onto one. Pick up the phone. Call him/her. 4. No friend in the list? Get out of the claustrophobic surroundings. Go out of the house. Get some fresh air. See the latest ipod, or the car in the showroom. Do some window shopping. Beware; limit yourself to window shopping, Judge the things in the window for their worth and plan on a future date to shop it. 5. Pick up a new activity. Something you have not done in a long time. Just pick up the most absurd thing that you can think of and start doing it with a passion. It must not be a normal chore, but something really exotic, something wonderful, something new. 6. A very effective, but unfortunately least used way is to help someone when you are lonely. Believe me, it works. The empathy which is created within you to help out an individual will soon overshadow your own loneliness and you are sure to feel better again. 7. Try teaching someone, and better still, teach yourself something. Something you are sure of and want to relearn it just for the pleasure of it. 8. Get into physical activity. Idling, crouching or sitting in front of a TV will only increase the feeling of loneliness. Get out, take the pair of sneakers and shoes out and go for a workout. Get the adrenaline pumping. 9. Be patient and reasonable to your self. Stop accusing yourself and others for the state that you are in right now. Take a pragmatic view of the whole situation and stop thinking drastically. Remember, the key to getting out of this loneliness bout is the simplicity in planning for it. Say to yourself, I am good and I want to be happy. I will be happy. I have nice people around myself and I will be in their company. 10. A really useful tip for the end- If all those above dont work, go back to tip number one and try again. This is bound to work. By David Steele As I spread the word about conscious dating and conscious relationships I'm amazed that not everyone agrees with me. I'm learning that for some singles "conscious" is a turnoff. OK, it's just a word, so if Conscious Dating doesn't work let's use another one to get our point across. How about "Courtship?" Now there's an old-fashioned term few can take issue with! According to the dictionary, Courtship means 1. The act, process, or period of courting. 2. Specialized behavior that leads to or initiates mating. By contrast, Wooing means 1. To seek the affection of with intent to romance. 2a. To seek to achieve; try to gain. b. To tempt or invite. 3. To entreat, solicit, or importune. So here's my take on the difference- Courtship is a conscious process of selecting and building a relationship with a potential life partner, and wooing is pursuing someone you're highly attracted to with a specific goal in mind; typically sex or to "get" the man or woman in some way. Wooing seems romantic and desireable to some folks. To me it seems self-centered and impulsive. You are pursuing what YOU want based upon your feelings of attraction and immediate goals for sex, companionship, etc, and you've decided that THIS person is your target. People who woo are concerned with what they can do and say to accomplish their immediate goal. Courtship takes the long view, respecting your potential life partner as someone to get to know and determine mutual fit over time. In our culture being patient and delaying gratification is undervalued. Courtship means you're honest with yourself and the person you're courting about your intentions, and they are interested in you as well. When you're authentic there is a risk of rejection, which might be why wooing seems more attractive to some singles. Conscious Dating means to be clear and intentional about dating. If you are simply seeking sex, that's OK, we call it "Recreational Dating" and recommend being honest about it. The movie industry is well aware of the psychology of creating a vehicle that as many movie-goers as possible will "relate" to. For example, "Home Alone" captures the fantasy of every kid to have the opportunity to make the decisions and be in charge. "Getting Even With Dad" captures a slightly similar sentiment. Reinforcement of existing concepts and emotions, with satisfying positive results, is what drives much of popular fiction, as well. Consider Danielle Steele's success. Look at how many businesses, or individuals, have flourished because they took a stand for something, usually not a pre-planned approach, and many were touched by the positive character demonstration. This is also what company image revolves around. What is your mission statement? What do you stand for? Where do you draw the line? What will you say "no" to? Understand that most people will support that which they agree with, even to the point of switching their shopping loyalties. Have you ever done business with a company that made a stand? Have you (this is generally more often the case) refused to do business with a company because of a stand? It is suggested to make your image out of what's inside you, not what you want to be perceived as. Sooner or later, if your image is not valid, there will be a backlash. You've Been Named Boss; Now What?

Director of Marketing for a major division of a multi-billion dollar corporation. She
would go from supervising one employee to managing 27 men and women. Her
annual budget would increase dramatically. She would be expected to breathe new
life into a lackluster marketing staff that had fallen behind the pace expected in the
hard-driving corporation. She came to me for advice on how to make the most of the opportunity. Heres the sense of what I told her. The biggest challenge will be to think in terms of managing a function getting
things done through other people rather than doing everything yourself. Your job
is to manage the assets assigned to you so that your departments goals are
reached. Be realistic about the reception you receive from your staff as well as your peers in
management. There will be many signs of cordiality. Accept them graciously, but be
aware that beneath the surface, there is another world rife with tension. You will be
on trial as the organization takes your measure. Everyone with whom you work--your boss, staff and the heads of other
departments--will ask themselves the central question: What does Betty coming
here mean to me? Key members of your staff will wonder why you were selected for the job instead of
them. Will you be shaking an iron fist or extending a velvet glove? The Meter Starts Running On Day One Dont try to remake the world overnight, but keep in mind the meter starts running
on day one. Hasten to establish your competence. Reassure your boss that you will help him
achieve his goals. Demonstrate to your staff that you will lead them and protect
them in the hierarchy. Various cliques will try to recruit you to their causes. Keep them at arms length.
Show your peers that while you are a team player, you understand your
responsibilities as their boss. You will have a degree of objectivity in your view of the situation on the first day
that will never be possible again because the personalities, the pressures, the gains
and losses you will encounter will color your thinking as time goes by. Write a memo to yourself as to how you see the situation, the task, the pluses and
downside factors. Describe how you feel about the people, especially your boss.
Spell out your goals, immediate and long term. Update this document as you go along; use your initial impressions as a
benchmark. Always be aware that your risks will be greater because the scope of your
responsibilities is broader and the impact of your decisions is more crucial. Never
forget that with fewer people between you and the top, you will have less protective
cover.
Be prepared for some surprises. No organization ever looks the same from the
inside as it does from the outside. Always see the activities of your department in the context of the larger mission of
the corporation. Communicate this view to your staff. You must have their working
support if you are to succeed as a boss. Ask yourself every day, How can I do this job so well that the organization will be

If they know about you and your areas of expertise in advance, chances are theyll contact you when they need a quote or expert insight about your particular field.
